Copyright documents, newspaper clippings, financial and legal documents, Civil War documents, and other papers of Samuel E. Gross, a Chicago real estate developer, author, and captain in the Union Army. A majority of the collection relates to Gross' play: The Merchant Prince of Cornville, and Gross' 1902 legal victory in a U.S. court against French author Edmond Rostand, who was accused of plagiarizing Gross' play and renaming it: Cyrano de Bergerac. Included are newspaper articles about the case and Rostand and multiple copies of Cyrano de Bergerac and The Merchant Prince of Cornville with copious notes. Civil War items include 1861 & 1865 discharge papers; 1864 testimonial presented to Gross by fellow Shenandoah Valley officers; Gross' 1864 captain's commission; and a 1901 veterans' resolution calling for Gross to receive the Medal of Honor, with a letter by Gross in response to the resolution. The collection also includes a few maps and documents related to Gross' real estate development activities, which were extensive.
